Founded by Stuart Martin in 1996, Stuart Martin Architects is based near Evershot in Dorset. Initially focussing on conservation work, the practice is increasingly involved in new-build projects within the classical and vernacular tradition. We specialise in one-off houses, whether repairing and extending listed buildings, or creating new buildings in rural and urban contexts.  We have worked all over England, from the Lake District to Cornwall and from Norfolk to Herefordshire. Stuart is a Trustee of the Lutyens Trust, and has a deep knowledge of and expertise in Lutyens's work. The practice has worked on a number of Lutyens buildings and advises the casework panel of the Lutyens Trust.

In the context of the ongoing environmental crises we feel strongly that architecture should be part of the solution, rather contribute to the problem. The use of sustainably sourced natural materials, which are naturally low in embodied energy and intrinsically ecological, is a priority for us, resulting in healthier, more durable buildings that will contribute to well-being and beauty for many years.

Our approach is founded on architectural sensibility and the appropriate use of style and idiom. We consider proportions and scale, developing unique details and controlling junctions so that the disparate elements meet as friends, not strangers. This cohesive design approach includes internal joinery, furniture (fitted and free-standing), interior decoration and the integration of appropriate technology.

Schemes are welcomed of any scale and Stuart is personally involved throughout the process, from inception to completion, placing equal importance on good design, communication with craftspeople and client satisfaction.  We create beautiful buildings that will give pleasure for many years to come and we would be delighted to work with you.
